Paintings by Katalin Spang

Growing up in New York City, I graduated from the High School of Music and Art, in 1964, a wonderful place to nurture my love of art. From there I went to The Cooper Union, in New York City, where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1968. In 1969, I received a Master of Arts in Painting from Villa Schifanoia, Florence Italy. This degree was an American one, Villa Schifanoia was a graduate school of Art and Music, run by an American college in Florence, Italy.

I have taught Fine Arts in the public school systems of Yonkers, NY, Tewksbury, MA and Burlington, MA for a total of 31 years. I have also taught evening classes in Calligraphy at Middlesex Community College for 12 years. I am now retired from teaching, and am a full time artist-painter.

Awards:

First Place blue ribbon in the oil painting category at the November, 2014 Reading Art Association exhibit

In the summer of 2003 I was the recipient of a grant, called “Art Renewal for Teachers” (ART), from the Philanthropic Institute of Boston. With this grant, I traveled to Tuscany, Italy, where I photographed the landscape and painted it in watercolors, en plein air.

My joy is to paint the landscape, en plein air, wherever I travel. Often the paintings done on location receive finishing touches in the studio, and sometimes sketches and photos on location lead to larger studio paintings. I work in oils, watercolors and pastels.

Painting for me is a spiritual experience. It is a careful distillation of my interpretation in a visual language of the beauty I find around me.

I am a juried artist member of the North Shore Arts Association, an associate member of the Rockport Art Association and the New England Watercolor Society, and a member of the Concord Art Association, Reading Art Association and the Newton Watercolor Society.
